Spaulding & Trumbull

Spaulding & Trumbull

About this Project:

In partnership with Chicago’s Near West Side Community Development Corporation, this project represents our development group’s commitment to community needs. The development utilized two separate buildings, both formerly Chicago Housing Authority Projects, and through a total gut renovation, created special needs housing for low income heads of household and children. The existing buildings were built between 1950-1960 and now provide 25 affordable special needs units. Spaulding and Trumbull and the onsite service program, Open Doors, is designed to break the cycle of chronic poverty by providing housing first, a stable living environment, and then employment. The comprehensive program is designed to create stability for families to become healthy as they move towards economic independence. Near West Side CDC provides supportive services to tenants, while management company UPA, LLC manages the property, implementing its Blended Housing Management Program.

In addition to significant renovation and safety upgrades to the buildings, many sustainable or “green” features are included. The buildings collect rain water for gardens through large water cisterns. The building is extremely economically efficient.

Completed April, 2008.
